History
Established by Danish merchant Valdemar Hanschell in 1884.
In 1884, Valdemar Hanschell founded the company that has evolved to be known as Hanschell Inniss Ltd. Like all of the rum bottlers in Barbados, except Mount Gay, this company buys rum from the West Indies Rum Refinery. The different blends of the Cockspur label are born at the Hanschell Innis blending and bottling operation in Fontabelle, north of Bridgetown. From here, rum is shipped all over the world in either bulk containers or in bottles, depending on the market destination.
In the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Sweden, Cockspur is bottled locally. You may not be able to find all of the blends listed here, but look for new products as the company increases distribution through its joint venture agreement with International Distillers and Vintners, which was completed in July of 1993. Although rum from the West Indies Rum Refinery is sold to several bottlers, the differences in the aging barrels and the variations in the blends is dramatic.
Cockspur has been produced in Barbados since 1884 at the famous West India rum factory. It is owned by Hanschell Innis Ltd. IDV acquired the agency in 1987.
In 1971, James H. Inniss & Son Ltd. was merged with Hanschell Larsen & Co. Ltd. to become Hanschell Inniss Ltd.
In 1974, Hanschell Inniss Ltd. was acquired by J.N. Goddard & Sons Ltd.
