History
1936: Bacardi y Companía was established by the Bacardi family in Puerta de Tierra.
1959 Bacardi y Companía was moved to Catano.
[...] Bacardi noted that Puerto Rican rums didn't incur any U.S. import duties - unlike the rum the company was making in Cuba. Soon, a small plant had been built on the site of an old Spanish jail in San Juan in 1936, saving Bacardi $1 a bottle on import duty.

In 1958, Bacardi opened its massive distillery in Catano: a clear statement of the firm's ambition. All U.S. sold Bacardi is made here, generating huge revenues for the Puerto Rican government and the rum publicity campaign. [...]
In the 1980's, the company developed and patented the Bacardi Corporation Anaerobic Water Filter Treatment System. The process, which takes place in two state-of-the-art, 3.5 million gallon waste disposal digesters, uses micro-organisms to 'eat' the waste material left from the distillation process. During the process, the micro-organisms give off a usable clearer gas (mostly methane) which provides about 70% of the total energy needs of the distillery while reducing its dependence on oil.
